Great Run for Lisa Weightman – Great Australian Run

Lisa Weightman was the first Australian Women across the line in the inaugural Great Australian Run, held last Sunday around a stunning 15km Melbourne course that took in Albert Park Lake, St Kilda Road, The Royal Botanic Gardens, Yarra River and CBD fringe.

A quality elite field assembled for both Men and Women’s divisions; including Men’s race winner and running legend Haile Gebrselassie (Eth), and local crowd favourite Craig Mottram.  While in the Women’s, eventual race winner Catherine Ndereba (Ken) and other internationals, where joined by Aussie Benita Johnson.

Given the strength of the field, third place for ASCEND Elite fan, Lisa Weightman (00:51:31) was perhaps somewhat of a surprise to some; in a finish that had her only edged out for second in a final sprint to the line with New Zealander Alice Mason (00:51:27).

Weightman, who commented that the race was “great fun”, lead the head pack out strongly in the early stages, before Ndereba made a decisive move at around the 8km mark that would see her never headed.

Chasing home strongly, Weightman’s stellar performance saw her finish ahead of big international names; Kaori Yoshida (Jpn) and Beijing Olympic Marathon gold medallist Constantina Dita (Rom).

Our congratulations also go to Lisa and her partner Lachlan who are getting married this Saturday… all the very best from the ASCEND Team!!!
